When a Knight Foundation representative recenlty compared newspapers to wax records the twittersphere exploded with jokes and riffs. Fortunately, Poynter.org collected much of the commentary into a handy Storify embed. Read and laugh after the jump ...

Although internships are notorious for giving interns tasks that no one else wants to do -- this is not the whole picture.
Last week, the interns working at Idealab in Pasadena, CA had a round table discussion on projects and internship expectations ... *gulp*. As you may know, Idealab is home to new technology ideas. As such, it provides a inspired setting and infrastructure to early stage start-ups. An internship discussion among ten of us covered a broad range of subjects -- everything from robotics and computer engineering to sales, social media and PR.

Perfect Market summer intern Meredith Bell proved her mettle at the Idealab Banana Split Speed Eating contest. Not only did she pound through a pie plate filled with a Neapolitan ice cream sundae, but she also proved to be a great sport, providing her fellow contestant (the final winner) with a spare hair clip so he could see. Great job, Meredith! (We hope you'll come back next summer ...?)

Perfect Market headed south to Orange County for Social Media Day this year. The Orange County Register threw a perfectly promoted social event conveniently timed with the release of the publication's new iPad app. In addition to panels, presented by local social types, the event was kitted out with numerous food trucks and an enthusiastic crowd of tech-savvy attendees who hit overflow capacity Thursday afternoon, prior to July 4th weekend. Here are a few highlights from the event curated by Perfect Market summer intern @MeredithABell.

Kittens and puppies and Scoble, OH MY!
With all the tiny canines and felines being shepharded into the extended Perfect Market family, it's a wonder we don't hold a 'Zoo Babies' party in the office. (Oh, that's right. Some of us don't like animals.) The bigger question may be, who is taking care of all these tiny fur tykes, as so many of us are out on the road. Last week, a healthy contingency headed to Seattle for client meetings and SMX Advanced. Another group headed east for Internet Week NYC. Meanwhile, back at the Pasadena HQ, Robert Scoble appeared for a Friday lunch to speak at Idealab University. Here are some of our favorite moments from the second week of June.

Oh, to be young, and an engineer in love ... with Google I/O Extended.
Yes, while last week we mulled a hat-filled royal wedding and a terrorist assasination complete with a U.S. military dog, this week we debated Chromebooks vs. MacBooks, Facebook's paid negative publicity campaign against Google, and we read early reviews of "Bridesmaids," ("the first black president of female-driven comedies.")
In our weekly photo essay, you'll see some of these events, and variations on the themes. We've got a trip to visit the Spring baby boom at the L.A. Zoo; an Instagram of The Three Stooges, from Highland Park, a testament to the celebration of L.A. street art. We've also got a half-eaten turkey sandwich; a view from a beautiful hike; a beautiful bouquet of roses with the caption "Kindness: It's easy to forget you are cared for — thank you for the kindness."
