In this video, Tim Ruder talks about a simple approach to site metrics for news publishers that has very powerful uses.  At the heart of this approach, is thinking of page views as the outcome of site reader behaviors.  By doing this you can unlock and focus on the underlying drivers of site growth: audience size, return frequency of use and depth of use.  This model for online news sites can be further refined with simple segmentation models that are available in standard site metric packages.

Is the Boston Globe Paywall a Winning Strategy?

The Boston Globe this week implemented a paywall on their www.bostonglobe.com site, the exclusive outlet for content written for the Boston Globe newspaper.  The company delved into two new areas in launching a dedicated site for the Boston Globe.  First, they implemented a new design and technical approach called responsive publishing.  The concept of responsive publishing is that a website should adapt to any browser, device or window size and still look great.  Having browsed the Boston Globe site over the last few days on multiple devices, it definitely lives up to this promise.  The site looks great.  (Jay Budzik, our CTO, is going to be commenting on the technical approach to responsive publishing, so check back.)

Last week, the interns working at Idealab in Pasadena, CA had a round table discussion on projects and internship expectations ... *gulp*. As you may know, Idealab is home to new technology ideas. As such, it provides a inspired setting and infrastructure to early stage start-ups. An internship discussion among ten of us covered a broad range of subjects -- everything from robotics and computer engineering to sales, social media and PR.
